La vallée de Puerto Escondido est l'entrée du parc national de Siera de Bahoruco.
Kate Wallace est arrivée dans le pays en 1994 en tant que bénévole du Peace Corps et a commencé à explorer les merveilles naturelles.  Elle a commencé à guider en 1997. En tant que membre actif des Birds Caribbean (anciennement Society of Caribbean Ornithology), elle a coordonné bon nombre de leurs activités. Elle a construit Villa Barrancoli, dans le village de Puerto Escondido, qui est situé à 400 mètres au-dessus du bassin de Lago Enriquillo. Il s'agit du camp de base pour les visites à Zapoten, le site de haute altitude pour de nombreux oiseaux endémiques.
