Kate Wallace kam 1994 als Freiwillige des Peace Corps ins Land und begann, die Naturwunder zu erkunden.  Sie begann 1997 mit dem Führen von Tieren. Als aktives Mitglied von Birds Caribbean (ehemals Society of Caribbean Ornithology) hat sie viele ihrer Aktivitäten koordiniert. Sie baute die Villa Barrancoli im Dorf Puerto Escondido, das über 400 Meter über dem Lago Enriquillo-Becken liegt.
